First Church of Christ, Scientist Nairobi is one of many branch churches of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, USA (also referred to as The Mother Church). Records at the Mary Baker Eddy Library at The Mother Church reveal that Christian Science services were first held in Kenya prior to the First World War. Services were held monthly from 1915 in the homes of two Christian Scientists. In 1932 their number had increased enough to qualify as a branch church. They thus applied to The Mother Church as a Christian Science Society. In 1934 the Society hosted a very successful Christian Science lecture. Through prayer and dedication, the Society grow rapidly. In November 1948 the Society built the present edifice on Nyerere Road in Nairobi. In May 1953 the society was recognized as a full branch church, of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.(Link: )

COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH

Supporting our communities through various activities is an important part of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Nairobi. For example (over the years) the youth have supported children’s homes. From time-to-time committees are set to meet specific needs, either national or local such as visiting prisons.
An example such outreach, that continues to bless our nation, is the case of one of our former church trustees, Mervyn Cowie. In the 1930s Mr. Cowie, realized that wildlife was getting endangered in the country and that the government did not seem to be interested in halting the situation. Mr. Cowie was instrumental in the establishment of the national parks in Kenya. [Source: Church archives and link).

Other church members have also been involved in national political events. An example of a significant national political contribution by church (also in the colonial era) relates to Sir Derek Erskine. He was involved in the establishment of Athletics Kenya and donated the land upon which Nyayo Stadium stands today. Sir Erskine was also instrumental in the release of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta from prison before independence. (Source: link and Erskine Family Archives).
Today, First Church of Christ, Scientist, Nairobi continues to bless humanity through prayer and other practical means. For example, the Church supported needy families during the Corvid 19 pandemic.
